These unique homes are similar in shape to Queen Anne and Stick Victorians, but the exterior detailing comes in the form of wooden shingles, and, in fact, the goal was to provide a smooth exterior to highlight the complex shape of the house itself as the focus. Think bundt cake. The shingle exterior is really what makes a Shingle house. Unfortunately considering the painstaking maintenance of that exterior, many Shingle houses have shed that characteristic, converting them into whatever the style of the home shape (usually Queen Anne, but sometimes other styles).
